Mustn't Grumble
So not even half way through November, and the Christmas lights are on here in Birmingham. Which seems pointless. Who are they for? Who are they for, considering that December has not even been reached. Come December 1st and no problem, on they go. Make a little ceremony of it perhaps.

I appreciate that all of the shops are preparing for the merchantile season, and that I have been busy ordering on-line for the last two weeks. Then again, I have to prepare for a month early and that is my choice.

Now the lead in time for Christmas commercialism is not as bad as in previous years, when we had television advertising begining in September. The thing is, everyone knows that Christmas is coming, it happens every year. Nobody wants it rammed down their throats.

==================

So we are in a meeting this week and the following phrase is uttered:

"...But that's a complete 'mare of a situation."

I had to think about what the person was saying. I could not work out why he was talking about a female horse and what she had to do with the situation. Perplexed, I leaned over and asked him, and he was equally puzzled. Then he replied, "Oh. I meant nightmare. Have you never heard that before?"

"No," I said. "Usually when I talk about mares I mean female horses." I did not add what I was thinking, "I do not shorten a word unnecessarily to cause confusion."

My tolerance for this kind of thing seems to be shrinking. Where is this going? Are we going to lose the word "nightmare"? And what are we going to call a female horse? Probably a female horse. Or indeed a lunar plain?

I've lost all tolerance for the extending of Christmas to an entire season. Local stores were already putting out displays several days before Halloween and began playing Christmas music November 1st. December 1st, I don't mind...but this business of nearly three months of Christmas is far too much.

My tolerance for Christmas before Christmas is very low. I'm actually appalled both as a consumer and as a Christian at what's become of the season. It used to be that we'd have a nice break between Halloween and Christmas with plenty of focus on Remembrance Day. This year, they were pulling down Halloween stuff the day before to make room for Christmas junk. Why? Do we really need to buy Christmas Crackers two months before the date?

And people wonder why we put Cthulhu on top of our tree...

Shorthand in verbal communication and local "lingos" is very bothersome to me as well. I understand that dialects and language evolution is necessary, but at some point we went from logical shorthanding and abbreviations to stuff that makes no sense or in some cases confuses things further. Particularly when there's no context or written punctuation such as apostrophes to aid in the understanding. People even use LOL in real life conversations. >_<

No we must grumble. I don't want to, but I enjoy it.

Last year on radio 4 there was a sketch about metrosexual rappers. The rap consisted entirely of repeated "It's all gone pants and I'm having a mare."

Believe me, the "mare" meme was annoying and pants LAST year.

a -- in my area, at least this year they waited until halloween had passed before starting "holday carols"

To "b" -- when I read "mare of a situation" I though "sea", meaning turbulent. (e.g. Mare Erythraeum) ...
